Fireside chat with Nancy Shemwell

Who is Nancy?

Good morning, I think of myself as a transformative business leader. With both public and private company experience as both a CEO/COO or Sales/Marketing/Operations EVP I have a unique ability to see things from the customer and company perspective, hopefully developing winning solutions for all stakeholders. I am passionate about the teams I work with an attempt to build organizational harmony with defined objective to deliver high performance.

Tell us more about your role in Trilogy Networks, Inc.

As COO of Trilogy I have the responsibility to take the vision from the founders (the CEO and CTO) and work with them to develop and execute strategies that resolve many of the challenges new technologies find as they roll out advanced applications in rural America. Trilogy has taken a forward thinking initiative and build the Rural Cloud Initiative (RCI), a coalition of 80+ carrier, technology and applications providers to join forces with these challenges.

What is the most difficult part of your job? But the most rewarding one?

The digital transformation of rural America is a challenging one for sure! How you roll out advanced applications to important verticals found in rural America – like Agriculture and Oil and Gas – is difficult. As most people are aware, there are major base connectivity challenges, let alone the ability to run IoT, AI and ML technologies which could substantially improve things like the global food supply.

As the world is facing a looming challenge of feeding the expanding world populations – any efforts to grow more quality food without additional land or water is exciting, it is certainly rewarding!

Is there anything that you would change about your professional path?

I don’t spend a lot of time looking backwards. I had the benefit of being moved in and out of functional and general management roles. This provided me a great foundation to help companies going forward.

What’s your key strategy for the development of your company?

Trilogy has recently launched an Emergency Agri-Infrastructure Initative;. WIth that we are working with the state and federal government, the land grant universities, rural carriers, and solutions providers to demonstrate the value of technology on agriculture throughout the entire supply chain.

What do you think about the next period of time, keeping in mind the pandemic and the new business climate? How will your industry be affected?

Our business – and candidly the world is impacted by the need to double the worlds food supply in 28 years – add a few crisis like the war in the Ukraine which impacted the wheat and grain markets is what we focus on. The universal government and industry awareness of this challenge will drive speed to solutions – so requirements to implement and quickly is what will be affecting us.

Please name a few technologies which have the greatest impact on your business.

The digital transformation we are undergoing bring advanced IoT, AI and ML capabilities – driven across 5G and the ultimate need to make decisions at the edge is what impacts us. A secure, distributed cloud with universal access is what we all need – and what Trilogy is driving across rural America.

What books do you have on your nightstand?

Honestly – I try to leave the business issues alone at bedtime. Thus my night time reading is more of a fictional or biographical theme.
